Burnley is a town in the North-West of England. Our caving club was formed in 1950 by a group of cavers living in Burnley who decided they would all benefit from forming a club which could own a collective pool of equipment such as ropes and ladders, and cave together as a group. Also at that time most of the established clubs were reluctant to admit female members. As the founder members enjoyed caving with ladies, Burnley Caving Club came into being open to all.
The clubs first ever coach meet
Before the advent of modern caving techniques and equipment such as Single Rope Techniques or even electron ladders, heavy rope ladders with wooden rungs were used. These took a lot of time to make, and needed a lot of people to carry into and out of the caves. Also few people had their own transport, so they used to hire a bus, and all go caving together. The formation of the club enabled equipment to be made or purchased by the club and stored to be lent out to members.
Burnley Caving Club remains an active caving club, with regular caving trips to the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. We are particularly proud of our continuing record of introducing people to the sport of caving. Novices are introduced to the sport at training sessions held at our club premises in Burnley usually on Thursday evenings 8 - 9 pm (click here for location map). The club has an indoor caving training tower, a meeting room and indoor climbing wall. Prospective members and visitors are welcome. Introductory and novice caving meets are held regularly during the year. A Committee elected annually, at an Annual General Meeting held in November after the Annual Dinner, runs BCC. Committee meetings are held on the second Thursday every month in the club hut open to all. The way the club is run is detailed in the clubs constitution.
Members also enjoy related pursuits like climbing, walking and mine exploration. On the social side after meeting on Thursday evenings we enjoy a drink afterwards at our local the Bridge Inn. Annually we have a Dinner usually held in the Dales. Other social events and non-caving meets are held throughout the year.
